Be A Character with Character

By Pastor James L. Groce
Molino, Florida

The word “character” in the Greek denotes a mark left by an engravers tool. It is inscribed markings noticeable by anyone. The engraved Character of our lives may be the only Bible some people will ever read. 2 Corinthians 3:3-4 plainly tells us that we are a letter from Jesus Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. If we are not Spirit inspired characters we are most possibly only stage characters.

Character counts. People of character guard their character as their life:

They do not let their good be evil spoken of . . . Protect your proper motives.

They forsake the appearance of evil. . . Don’t ever compromise righteousness.

They do unto others as they would have them do unto them. . . The golden rule really does work.

They are consistent in conduct and action. . . Character flavors the whole man.

Character counts. Me, I’m working on it, how about you?

You have probably read this little ditty before; but perhaps a few haven’t had the privilege, so I post it here:

I am a part of the Fellowship of the Unashamed.

I have Holy Ghost Power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line.

The decision has been made. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.

My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, worldly talking, cheap giving, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don’t have to be first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, love by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.

My pace is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my Guide is reliable, my mission clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed.

I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, back up, let up, or shut up until I’ve preached up, prayed up, paid up, stored up, and spoken up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I must go until He returns, give until I drop, preach until all know, and work until He stops me. And when He comes to get His own, He will have no problem recognizing me.

My colors will be clear.

Horace Greeley had a quote that Harry Truman used to like: “Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wings, those who cheer today may curse tomorrow, only one thing endures — character.”

Just another little tidbit on this subject:

A man took his daughter to the zoo, during their visit they happened across a booth selling cotton candy and the daughter pleaded for some of it to which the father consented. As the attendant handed her a huge ball of cotton candy, the father asked, “Sweetheart, are you sure you can eat all of that?” “Don’t worry, Dad,” she answered, “I’m a lot bigger on the inside than on the outside.”

That’s what real character is – being bigger on the inside.
